Netanyahu-Trump Call on Lebanon as Israel Weighs Beirut Strike

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a phone call with US President Donald Trump on Monday to address the rapidly deteriorating situations in Lebanon and Iran, Israeli media reported — as Washington scrambled to contain a potential large-scale assault on Beirut.

Israeli media confirmed the call without disclosing who initiated it, reporting only that Lebanon and Iran dominated the discussion.

The conversation unfolded against a backdrop of intensifying Israeli military activity in Lebanon, coming just hours after Netanyahu ordered the military to execute airstrikes on the Lebanese capital Beirut. Israel's public broadcaster reported that Tel Aviv had originally planned to strike Beirut's southern suburbs Monday morning before opting to delay, citing US intervention.

"Israel is exerting significant pressure behind the scenes to launch an attack in response to the escalating Hezbollah strikes, but it is unclear at this stage whether the United States will allow a large-scale attack on Beirut in light of Iranian threats, including the threat of a direct attack on Israel," the broadcaster said.

"To this day, Israel has succeeded in separating the Iranian arena from the Lebanese scene, and it remains unclear whether this time Israeli interests will prevail over American interests."

Compounding the diplomatic complexity, Iranian media reported that Tehran had frozen indirect communications with Washington in direct response to the Israeli escalation in Lebanon — a move that added further strain to already fragile ceasefire diplomacy.

The regional crisis erupted after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran in February. Tehran retaliated with attacks on Israel and US Gulf allies, while shutting down the Strait of Hormuz. A Pakistani-mediated ceasefire took hold on April 8, but follow-on talks in Islamabad broke down without a lasting deal, even as diplomatic efforts have quietly continued.
