EU Willing to Support Middle East Peace Efforts, Antonio Costa Says

(MENAFN) EU Council President Antonio Costa said Monday that the European Union is prepared to back ongoing Middle East peace efforts following a phone conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

According to a statement from Sharif’s office, the two leaders reviewed the evolving situation in the Middle East during their discussion.

Sharif updated Costa on Pakistan’s recent diplomatic initiatives and broader peace efforts. Costa, in turn, praised Islamabad’s “constructive role in promoting dialogue and stability in the region.”

He further said the EU “was ready to support this process, in every possible manner.”

Both sides underscored the importance of sustained dialogue and diplomacy as essential tools for achieving long-term regional and global stability.

In a post on social media, Costa said the international community is watching with “great expectation” the next round of talks between Washington and Tehran, adding that the meeting should take place in Islamabad “as soon as possible.”

He also expressed hope that negotiations would lead to an agreement ending the conflict and enabling the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

“The EU supports all ongoing efforts toward peace in the Middle East,” he said.

The remarks come as preparations intensify for a second round of US–Iran negotiations expected in the Pakistani capital.

Pakistan previously hosted the first round of talks between the two sides on April 11–12 after facilitating a two-week ceasefire agreement reached on April 8, which is set to expire by dawn Wednesday.

Earlier reports from Pakistani sources indicated that Iranian representatives are expected to arrive in Islamabad on Tuesday.
