Iran Islamic Republic’s supreme leader says nation prevailed over US
Widespread demonstrations broke out across Iran in late December, initially driven by rising prices and economic pressure. The protests later expanded into broader anti-government unrest, with violent confrontations resulting in hundreds of deaths among both security personnel and rioters. Authorities later announced that stability had been restored and that calm had returned to major cities.
In a series of posts on social media on Saturday, Khamenei blamed the unrest on foreign interference, accusing the US and Israel of engineering the turmoil and identifying Washington as the principal instigator.
“The US had made extensive preparations to orchestrate this sedition. This sedition was a prelude to even bigger schemes. The Iranian nation defeated the US,” he wrote.
He further claimed that US President Donald Trump “himself was involved in the sedition,” pointing to Trump’s public message to protesters that “help is on its way” and to the deployment of US naval forces to the Middle East during the unrest.
According to reports, Washington had seriously considered military action against Iran, with a strike described as imminent at one stage. The attack ultimately did not occur after Trump said he decided to halt the plan upon learning that Tehran had reversed decisions to carry out executions of the most violent detainees.
“Yes, we extinguished the fire of the sedition, but that isn’t enough. The US must be held accountable,” Khamenei said.
He added that Iranian authorities “do not intend to lead the country toward war. However, we will not just let go of the criminals” inside or outside Iran.
Separate reports indicated that senior Iranian officials warned neighboring countries that Iran could target US military bases in the region if Washington followed through on threats to attack the Islamic Republic.
