Israel Criticizes Mamdani’s First Executive Order

(MENAFN) The Israeli Foreign Ministry has accused newly inaugurated New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani of fueling antisemitism through his initial executive action.

Immediately after taking office on Thursday, Mamdani, a committed democratic socialist and pro-Palestinian Muslim, annulled a wide range of directives issued by his predecessor, Eric Adams.

Among these reversals was an order that had prohibited city institutions from divesting from Israel. Mamdani also formally rejected the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism.

“On his very first day as NYC Mayor, Mamdani shows his true face: He scraps the IHRA definition of antisemitism and lifts restrictions on boycotting Israel,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry declared on X Friday. “This isn’t leadership. It’s antisemitic gasoline on an open fire.”

Jewish organizations likewise denounced the decision in a collective statement.

Conversely, the New York branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group in the US, praised the move.

The organization argued that the “controversial and overly broad” IHRA definition has been employed to silence criticism of Israel’s government.
